Types of building stone used in various types of construction:
Uncut (raw) stone
Random cut stone
Fragmented and sifted stone (aggregate)
Dimensioned blocks
Processed stone, cut and shaped in the form of slabs or tiles.
All these stones are obtained from "stone quarries" opened in the earth's crust. The treatment of the stone changes in accordance with the work in which it is to be employed. The quarries from which dimension stones are obtained are known, though incorrectly from the scientific point of view, as "Marble Quarries".
In recent years, in order to prevent this terminological confusion in the international market, material in the Natural Dimension Stones sector have been classified in four categories:
True (Scientific) Marbles
Coloured Natural Stones
Travertines and onyxes
Hard Stones (Magmatic and Volcanic)
According to this classification, it is sufficient to employ the name of the region together with the type and colour: e.g. Marmara Marble, Afyon White Marble (Cream), Bilecik Beige, Adapazari Black, Denizli Travertine, Kirflehir Onyx, Kozak Granite, Izmit-Kadifekale Andesite, Nevsehir Volcanic Tufa.
