The most important process during travertine tile production is no-doubt filling. You can assume filling process like a make-up of a lady. It likes a little bit art also. Very nice filling can make a travertine tile to be seen very nice although it is not in real. Also vice versa...
So; what are the points of filling, materials used in filling of travertine, filling machines...
Travertine Filling Machines
There are several types of filling machines for travertine. These are the ones with 3,4,5 and 6 heads. The most used ones are having the 4 and 5 heads. Both tiles and slabs can be filled with these machines.
The filling machines for the tiles may have either 40mm or 70mm belt width and the ones for the slabs have 200mm belt with as standart.
With 40mm belt width machines, max. 40mm in with tiles can be filled. The machines with 70mm belth width may be used to fill upto 65mm width tiles.
The capacities of the machines may differ from 300 sqm / 8 hours upto 500 sqm / 8 hours depending on the number of the heads.
Usage of the bowls within the filling machines
Head means both the motors and the bowls under the motors. The filling material is put into the bowls under these motors. The travertine tiles moves under these bowls and while they are passing the bowls; the filling material is pressed in to the holes of the travertine tiles.
In the first bowl, you mix the filling material with water, in the second you mix with less water(it has to be mud mood). You have to put the material into the last bowls as in dry form. So if the number of heads are 5 or 6 that means; the travertine tiles are being filled better than the machines with 3 heads.
Filling Material
Besides the number of heads; it is also very important to prepare the filling material. The filling material is prepared with cement, kaolen and dry paint. These materials are mixed together due to the color of the tiles. This mixture is very important since the color of the filling mixture has to match the color of the tiles. If the quality of the material is important as 50% the other 50% is the quality of filling.
After filling selection comes first. This is 95% done with eyes and preferrable with women workers however there are very few factories using some kind of laser machines to check the filling quality. Before the final honing, the travertine tiles have to be dryed. This is done by the travertine drying lines or naturally having the tiles waited 3 days. (If it is under sun, 2 days will be enough)
