One can visit the Honister slate underground mine in England and learn how the slate is prepared, the mine鈥檚 history and the benefits of slate as a building material.
Unlike slate taken from quarries, Westmorland Green Slate is wholly extracted from beneath the hills - from eleven miles of mine tunnels - and is entirely environmentally friendly.
The tour shows the current workings of the mine and how a mixture of modern and traditional methods are used to extract the slate which was formed some 400 million years before tyrannosaurus Rex was to stride the land.
