In the spring of this year, some 400 natural
stone companies in Italy were asked about the
current market situation and the short- and
medium-term prospects. The majority of those
asked assumed at that time that the demand for
Italian natural stone products would probably
tend to deteriorate in the coming period. The
reasons stated for this assessment were the
recessionary trend in some major sales markets
and the increasingly confident competition
especially from China and India.
Another problem is the constantly growing
competition from the ceramic and stoneware
industries. Their partly aggressive advertising
that is damaging to the product natural stone
actually calls for an appropriate counteraction,
but the Italian natural stone industry still
lacks the necessary financial means for such a
campaign.
