URUMQI, Sept. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- A grayish
nephrite jade rock, weighing 3.7 tons, has been
discovered in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur
Autonomous Region.
Yue Yunhui, deputy head of Xinjiang
Autonomous Regional Center for Inspection of
Precious and Semi-Precious Stones, claimed the
rock was the largest of its kind ever found in
the country.
Nephrite is a white to dark green variety of
jade, a metasilicate of iron, calcium, and
magnesium, usually used for carvings or jewelry.
The rock was found in an area near the
headstream of the Ye'erqiang River, in Tajik
Autonomous County of Taxkorgan, 600 km from Kaqun
Township, Shache County, known as the "capital of
semi-precious stones".
The huge nephrite rock was taken by raft to
Kaqun by 21 farmersin 47 days.
Tohti Shauti, a farmer from Kaqun Township
and now owner of the nephrite, said he would
rather keep the rock if no good price is offered.
