Terms necessary for the understanding of
monuments.
Monument - An upright die and base together, also
referred to as tombstones, headstones, and
gravestones.
Slant Marker - A stone, sight marker that is
slanted, also on a base.
Beveled Marker - It is just that, a stone marker
with a slight bevelGrass Marker - This marker is
flush to the ground.
Balanced Rock Pitch - The natural rough edge of a
stone.
Polished 1 - Only the face of the stone is
polished.
Polished 2 - The face and back of the stone is
polished
Polished 3 - Polished face, back, and top of
stone
Polished 4 - The stone is completely polished.
Measurements - Length x Width x Height (all
measurements are in feet-inches).
5-0 x 0-8 x 3-0 as an example
Etching - Skilled craftsmen use diamond tipped
tools to scratch a polished granite's surface to
create color images/portraits.
Sandblast - Skilled craftsmen use a high
pressured blower to blast sand into stone to
inscribe designs, letters, etc.
Producer or Quarrier - Extracts rough stone
blocks from a quarry. May offer milling and
fabrication capabilities.
Distributor - Responsible for distribution of
rough blocks, semi-finished slabs or fabricated
stonework Fabricator - Converts rough or semi-
finished stone materials into items ready for
installation as dimension stone or through direct
purchases of furniture, table tops, novelty or
other retail items.
Contracting Installer - Erects and installs
fabricated dimension stone. May have shop
fabrication facilities.
Maintenance or Refinishing Contractor - May
perform any of the following: cleaning or
maintenance services; refinish once-polished
stone materials; renovation of neglected stone
surfaces.
Sales Agent - A direct sales person for a
Producer, Fabricator, or Distributor.
