Travertine is a form of massive calcium carbonate, CaCO 3 , resulting from deposition by springs or rivers. It is often beautifully coloured and banded as a result of the presence of iron compounds or other (e.g., organic) impurities. This material is variously known as calc-sinter and calcareous tufa when used for decorative purposes), in fact Travertine is actually a dense closely compacted form of limestone.

In Turkey, many kinds and colors of travertines are being quarried. The most well known travertine in Turkey is Denizli travertine which comes mostly light. Denizli is a city in Anatolia.

Other than Denizli, also Konya, Kutahya, Eskisehir, Aydin, Corum, Sivas, Elazig, Yozgat and Bucak cities are also popular with their travertines.

Light travertine is mostly quarried in Denizli and Aydin. Yellow travertine is quarried in Sivas and Elazig mostly. In the other cities, you can find all of the travertine kinds including red and noche also.
