Guangzhou becomes first developed city in China

Jan. 5, 2006 (China Knowledge) – Guangzhou’s per capita is expected to surpass US$10,000 in 2006, becoming the first developed Chinese city by World Bank standards.

With seven million registered residents, the capital of China's richest province Guangdong will see GDP reach RMB 623.6 billion in 2006, a 14.4% increase from 2005, said city mayor Zhang Guangning in a draft report on the work of the city government.

According to statistics, economic growth is mainly driven by the automobile, petrochemical, electronics and communications equipment industries.
