Jan. 17, 2007 (China Knowledge) – BenQ's revenues from China grew only about 30% to RMB 4.1 billion in 2006, falling far short of its goal of RMB 5 billion, according to BenQ China general manager Michael Tseng. The goal for a 60% revenue increase had failed due to BenQ’s lackluster performance in its handset sector, said Tseng to DigiTimes.com. BenQ’s handset marketing team in China has already been reduced to 500 from the original team of 1,500. Looking forward, BenQ will be concentrating its resources on the mid-range and high-end segments. Eight product categories have been chosen for the China market in 2007. These include: LCD monitors, LCD TVs, optical storage, notebooks, desktops, projectors, digital cameras, and handsets. LCD products will be given top priority, while handsets will be given the least. BenQ sold 1.4 million LCD monitors in China last year, up 135.3%, a growth higher than the national average of 99.3%, according to the company. BenQ was the second-largest LCD monitor vendor in China last year, while optical storage products continued to be number one in China for the sixth consecutive year.
