The recently opened extension to the Madrid-Barajas airport includes a new terminal, two runways and a parking area. Luis Sanchez Diez has supplied two types of marble: 鈥淏ronceado Sierra Elvira鈥 and 鈥淧erlato Imperial鈥 to clad more than 90,000 m2 of surface.
The new terminal of the Madrid-Barajas airport, opened a few weeks ago, will double the operational capacity of Madrid鈥檚 airfield so as to increase user numbers from the current 20 million to 70 million passengers annually. Together with the construction of two new runways and a parking area, the new terminal forms part of a project with a cost close to 6,200 million euros, of which 422 million will be spent in 2006. The architect firms in charge of the project are 鈥淩ichard Rogers Partnership鈥 and 鈥淓studio Lamela鈥.
The new 鈥淓dificio Terminal鈥 (NET) is located at the far north of the airport. It has a futuristic style, being spacious and well lit, and it has of course been equipped with all the services necessary for a modern airport building: check-in, security control, baggage collection, etc. Distributed over six levels, its total area is 470,261 m2. The three above- ground level are for check-in, security and boarding. The three underground levels are dedicated to maintenance, baggage handling, and the inter-terminal shuttle.
Sat茅lite Building
The 鈥淓dificio Sat茅lite鈥, with design features similar to the 鈥淣uevo Edificio Terminal鈥, has a service capacity for 15 million passengers annually. It is composed of two separate blocks, one for boarding and arrival of passengers, and another for passport control and a shopping area. Each block has three above-ground levels.
The 鈥淓dificio Sat茅lite鈥, with 286,984 m2, has 26 contact positions, or fingers (16 of which are double). This insures rapid and comfortable boarding and arrival for non Schengen international passengers.
The 鈥淟uis S谩nchez D铆ez鈥 company has been responsible for the supply and installation of the flooring: a total of 73,000m2 of 鈥淏ronceado Sierra Elvira鈥 limestone, with a polished finish, 3-cm thickness, and in 90x90, 90x75, and 90x60cm sizes. 5,000 linear metres of solid 鈥淏ronceado Sierra Elvira鈥 has been used for the skirting. The aesthetic characteristics of this material as well as its physical and mechanical properties of absorption and strength, resulted in it being the most competitive out of twenty other materials that passed initial specific tests.
The 鈥淓dificio Sat茅lite鈥 consists of three blocks separated by a series of circular skylights that permit the entrance of daylight into the building. The first block contains the check-in desks, the second is dedicated to security controls, and the boarding points are located in the third (called 鈥淒ique鈥).
The 鈥淒ique鈥 has an extension of 1,14 Km.
On the second floor is situated the station for the APM, which connects the new terminal building to the 鈥淓dificio Sat茅lite鈥.
The firm 鈥淟uis S谩nchez D铆ez鈥 has also supplied and installed the flooring and lining of the public conveniences using a total of 3,000m2 鈥淧erlato Imperial鈥 honed marble, with dimensions of 90x60x4cm and 90x75x4cm.
Parking areas and Accesses
The Madrid-Barajas airport extension has a parking area and access in which vehicles may be parked within the new terminal area thus facilitating passenger access to the building.
The car park, for use by private and rental cars, is a building with 9,000 parking spaces.
With a total surface area of 309,000m2, it consists of six adjacent modules. Each module has five floors, and the presence of 12 escalators, 24 lifts, and 14 automatic walkways and ramps facilitate pedestrian displacement. Within the parking area a total of 11,000m2 of honed 鈥淧erlato Imperial鈥 with dimensions of 90x60x4, 75x60x4, and 60x60x4cm have been installed. In the 鈥淧abell贸n de Estado鈥, Luis S谩nchez D铆ez has supplied 4,000m2 of polished 鈥淏ronceado Sierra Elvira鈥 marble with dimensions of 90x90x3cm, 90x75x3cm, and 90x60x3cm. Luis Sanchez Diez has also supplied the 1,500m2 of 鈥淏ronceado Sierra Elvira鈥 paving stones with a saw-cut finish and dimensions of 20x10x10cm. This significant contribution of stone materials to the Madrid airport extension is proof of the importance of stone in present day architecture.
