Jan. 24, 2007 (China Knowledge) – Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group announced on Tuesday strategic investments in Access China Media Solutions, which is a partnership between U.S.-based digital content delivery company Melodeo Inc. and Japan's Access Co. Ltd. <4813>
With the focus in developing technology to help consumers download complete songs to their phones, Access Media is a suitable company for Sony BMG and Warner Music to invest in. Both companies have declined to disclose the cost of investment in Access China.
With 460 million mobile users, China is a lucrative market for Sony BMG and Warner Music. The Mainland’s mobile distribution, which is mostly controlled by cellular network operators, is a more secure way to distribute music than the Internet or CDs.
The record companies said the focus of the deal will mainly be on local repertoire. Sony BMG, a joint venture between Sony Corp. <6758> <SNE> and Bertelsmann <BTG4>, said it already has one of the largest catalogs of Mandarin-language music in the world. On the other hand, Warner Music, the world's fourth largest record company, signed a deal in June with China's second-largest mobile operator China Unicom <CHU><762> to sell its music over the mobile operator’s wireless network.
