Portugal’s most important building exhibition took place in Lisbon in mid May, when the Portuguese natural stone industry presented its own forum for the first time at Tektónica.

The Tektónica from 10-14 May 2005 opened its doors in four of the exhibition halls on the former expo site in Lisbon, where Portugal was host to the world in 1998. The Portuguese Natural Stone Forum took place this year for the first time as part of the Siror, the exhibition’s natural stone show. The aim of the forum is to create a broad public awareness of Portuguese natural stones. Portuguese natural stone producers and traders showed exclusively local stones at the forum. Apart from the exhibition organizer FIL (Feira Internacional de Lisboa), this initiative was mainly supported by Assimagra (Portuguese Association of Marble, Granite and related Industries and the Order of Architects), Cevalor and the Portuguese Trade and Tourism Office (Icep). The forum was accompanied by numerous presentations that examined the present situation in the Portuguese natural stone industry, but also offered an insight into foreign markets.

The forum attracted a good response from exhibitors and visitors. »Here architects can see just how varied Portuguese stone is,« says João Calado, Marketing Manager at Filstone Natural, Alcanede, »until now it has often been overshadowed by new foreign materials.« The exhibitors in the natural stone segment were overall very pleased about the large share of architects among the visitors. Tektónica is Portugal’s most important exhibition for building materials. »Three in one« is the concept of this building exhibition, which is arranged in the three exhibition segments Siror, SK and Simac. Natural stone, stoneworking tools and products for stone care and finishing treatment are shown in the Siror segment. The SK segment presents ceramic wall and floor coverings. The Simac segment presents other covering materials from cork and metal to plastic, plus various home accessories and tools. A special focus at this year’s Tektónica was on innovations: a separate pavilion was available for companies that presented innovations in products, applications and service.

It is hoped that Tektónica will attract even more international visitors in the future (a good half of the some 1,000 exhibitors came from abroad). The international share of the around 60,000 visitors grew by 12 %, especially the number of visitors from Spain, China, South Africa, the USA and the United Arab Emirates.
